Popped in to get a house plant as a thank you gift for a friend who owns a cat that likes to chew. I explained to the lady in the shop that I was checking on my phone to see which of their plants weren't toxic to cats. She scoffed at me, saying that she'd never heard of such a thing and it sounded like nonsense. When I told her that I'd looked up that cyclamen are poisonous for cats on an American cat charity's website (the ASPCA, equivalent to our RSPCA) she then said, "Oh, Americans - I don't know how they get out of bed in the morning". I left immediately. I found her rude, dangerously ill-informed and the casual xenophobia was horrible.
